HomeMy WebLinkAboutCommunications Specialist Job Description 2023CITY OF MONROE JOB DESCRIPTION COMMUNICATIONS SPECIALIST Supervised by: Communications Director Supervises No Supervision Summary: Under the general guidance of the Communications Director, the Communications Specialist creates, edits, and publishes internal and external multimedia communication products for the City of Monroe. The position also supports City departments in promoting and organizing community programs and events. The position is also responsible for main Essential Job Functions: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 1. Researches and write press releases and posts content to C Communication channels. 2. Responsible for monitoring and ensuring content is up to date. 3. Monitors social media services, or programs. 4. Collaborate with City department to prepare content calendars for social channel distribution. 5. Prepare promotional information for upcoming City and community programs and events. 6. Maintains City and regional event calendar working in conjunction with City staff, other governmental entities, and community organizations. 7. Work with Communications Director and City staff to develop new content opportunities. 2 8. Manage media inquiries and coordinate press conferences, interviews, and events. 9. Maintain a positive working relationship with City staff, elected officials, media representatives, key community figures, and vendors. 10. Willingness to provide support to the organization and facilitation of special events throughout the City. 11. , along with adherence to the style guide. 12. Ability to maintain confidential information 13. Maintain City employee emergency notification system for employees, residents, and customers. 14. Attend City and community events as directed by the Communications Director with the intent of taking photos, and sharing content on City social channels 15. Prepare internal communications for City employees. 16. Other duties and responsibilities as directed by the Communications Director Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities and Minimum Qualifications: The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Requirements include the following: • Communications, Media, Journalism, Public Relations, or related field • Three years of experience in communications preferred. • A valid Michigan Vehicle and the ability to maintain one throughout employment. • Skill in handling difficult public relations issues with tact and diplomacy. • Efficiently manages multiple timelines and projects. 3 • Exceptional written and verbal communication including superb knowledge of English language: grammar, spelling, and punctuation. • Video production experience preferred. • Proficient in photography • Team-oriented and able to work in a collaborative environment • Demonstrated ability to manage organization level social media programs . • Skill in the use of office equipment and technology, including Microsoft Suite applications and software specific to the department and the ability to master new technologies. Adobe creative Applications a plus. • Ability to attend meetings and events outside of normal business hours. Physical Requirements and Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works both in an office and in the field. While in the office, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and by telephone, read the regular and small print, view and produce written and electronic documents and enter data on a computer keyboard with repetitive keystrokes. The employee must be mobile both in an office setting and in the field with the ability to stand, sit, stoop and kneel, use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 15 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, if needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an indoor office setting and occasionally works outdoors. The employee regularly travels between work sites using a motor vehicle. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to loud. January 2023
