JOB DESCRIPTION
PARKS & RECREATION MAINTENANCE WORKER
Supervised By: Recreation Manager, receives general direction from the Parks Maintenance
Supervisor
Supervises: Leads seasonal and other workers, as assigned.
Position Summary:
Under the general direction of the Parks Maintenance Supervisor, the employee is responsible for
leading a team of employees in performing a wide variety of custodial and maintenance tasks, including
parks and building maintenance, snow removal, and other tasks as assigned. The position requires
considerable physical effort, the use of manual and power tools, and the operation of heavy equipment
and vehicles. Position receives daily work assignments from supervisory personnel, along with
performance and completion time requirements and expectations. Position may be reassigned at any
time to various work groups as needs dictate.
Essential Duties and Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions.
These examples do not include all of the duties that the employee may be expected to perform. To
perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.
1. Receives daily work assignments, estimated timetable for completion, staff and equipment
allocations from supervisory staff.
2. Is expected to skillfully operate and carry out work activities utilizing any and all equipment
classified as heavy, medium, or light.
3. Assists in inspecting City parks, athletic fields, recreation buildings and playground equipment for
potential safety hazards, needed repairs and maintenance.
4. Operates equipment utilizing all required and suggested safety precautions, noting and
correcting potentially hazardous conditions that may impact self, other employees, citizens, and
equipment.
5. Performs minor operational maintenance on assigned equipment, including but not limited to
fueling, greasing, checking fluid levels, and/or other appropriate functions which are typically
assumed to fall within the scope of responsibility of a regular operator of said equipment.
6. Performs a wide variety of parks maintenance tasks, including, but not limited to, athletic field
grooming and marking, irrigation system maintenance, stocking and cleaning buildings, trash
pick-up and removal, manually shoveling snow and ice and salting sidewalks, parking lots, lawn
mowing, restroom cleaning, graffiti removal, repairing of playground equipment, picnic tables,
and other appurtenances, maintenance of sports league equipment, and other related tasks.
7. Assists in maintaining records of project status, resource requirements, repairs completed, and
other operational data. Assists in the preparation of summaries and reports as required.
8. During DPS emergency assignments, may perform a variety of winter maintenance tasks,
including, but not limited to, operation of plow and salt trucks, manual shoveling, ice breaking,
and salting of sidewalks, parking lots, bridges, utility installations, and other public facilities. May
assist other vehicle operators in large-scale snow removal operations by alerting of obstacles,
and clearing areas not easily accessible to equipment.
9. Occasionally works during weekends, holidays, and after normal working hours, as needed and
assigned.
10. Performs related work as required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum
qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable accommodations

Requirements include the following:
• A high school diploma or GED.
• One year of experience in construction, maintenance or related field.

• Ability to read blueprints and be familiar with construction materials, equipment, and supplies
used in park and recreation activities.

• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative and

• Ability to respond to emergency situations on a 24 hour basis.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, sit, walk, climb, use
hands and fingers, talk, hear and view and create written documents. The employee uses hand strength
to grasp tools and may climbs ladders or uneven terrain. The employee is frequently required to reach
with hands and arms, such as to operate and repair vibrating machinery, use wrenches, hand tools, etc.
and operate motorized equipment and vehicles. The employee must lift or push/pull objects of up to 75
lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, if needed, for employees required to lift or move
objects that exceed this weight.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the field. The employee is
frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock;
vibration; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work
environment is usually moderate, and can be very loud.
