HomeMy WebLinkAboutDPS Forestry Maintenance Worker Job Description 02 05 25 CITY OF MONROE JOB DESCRIPTION DPS FORESTRY/MAINTENANCE WORKER Supervised By: Forestry Supervisor Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities Position Summary: Under the supervision of the Forestry Supervisor, performs a variety of urban forestry, beautification, and landscaping tasks, with emphasis on tree trimming, tree removal, and plant care. Performs general labor tasks and the operation of heavy equipment typically assigned to forestry work. During winter and other emergency operations periods, utilizes available skills for general departmental benefit, including operation of heavy or medium equipment and other general labor tasks typically assigned to other Maintenance Worker and Equipment Operator classifications. Receives daily work assignments from Job Leader - Forestry or other supervisory personnel, depending on organizational structure and needs. Essential Job Functions: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties that the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. 1. As a part of a continuous schedule of tree trimming, tree removal, tree planting, and general plant care and landscaping tasks, receive assignment schedule and procedural instruction from the assigned leader or supervisor. 2. Secures work area, arranges appropriate traffic control, directs citizens safely away from the work area, and arranges movement of parked vehicles and other potentially affected property away from the work area in advance. 3. Works from or on hydraulic apparatus (Hi-Ranger or similar equipment), positioning, cutting, and trimming dead limbs, limbs obstructing or soon to cause obstruction with or potential hazard to overhead utility lines, buildings, rights-of-way, or other public or private property. 4. Climbs trees, using rope and saddle, secures position, and removes limbs and branches. 5. When serving on the ground, assists climbers, picks up limbs and branches and feeds them to the chipping machine, cleans the work area, and returns and restores affected public and private property as closely as possible to its original condition. 6. Completely removes dead, diseased, or hazardous trees identified for removal by supervisory staff, topping and removing major limbs and trunks. 7. Trims logs and utilizes heavy equipment (log loader or similar equipment) and other methods to remove all work products from the site. 8. Continually evaluates conditions for the safety of self, other employees, and the general public. Secures equipment and vehicle from damage and signals instruction to other crew members, notifying them immediately of any hazard possibility. Participates in training programs as necessary to ensure the ability to carry out these provisions. 9. Operates chemical sprayer and other similar apparatus to perform preventative maintenance as necessary to prevent and protect trees and other vegetation from disease and / or pest infestation. Repairs damaged trees and stakes for stability as needed. 10. Responsible for making immediate response calls to emergency scenes during or after working hours to remove downed or hazard-causing trees. Assists in coordination with utility companies to ensure a safe work area for tree and/or limb removal. 11. Performs stump grinding, removal, loading, hauling, and disposal of waste material. 12. Prepares soil, plants trees, cares for as necessary and as directed, and restores adjacent property, all to ensure maximum probability of survival. 13. When needs dictate, receives task assignments and participates in various landscaping, moving, and planting projects in City parks and other City properties. 14. During winter operations and other emergency operations periods and any other times deemed necessary for maximum efficiency of Departmental operations, performs other tasks at lower classifications and/or outside of forestry operations, including operation of heavy or medium equipment and other general labor tasks typically assigned to other Maintenance Worker classifications. 15. When directed by supervisory staff and as operational needs dictate, train other departmental employees to assist in tasks associated with this position, including operation of equipment, for the purpose of training backup personnel in case of emergency situations. 16. Performs minor operational maintenance on assigned equipment, including but not limited to fueling, greasing, checking fluid levels, and/or other appropriate functions that are typically assumed to fall within the scope of responsibility of a regular operator of said equipment. 17. Performs related work as required. Requirements include the following: ● A high school diploma or GED ● Two years of progressive experience in forestry, landscaping, equipment operation and/or maintenance position ● to maintain one throughout employment. ● ithin 90 days. ● Orientation to equipment above 36,000 pounds Gross Vehicle Weight. ● Minimum score of 70% on the City of Monroe aptitude examination. ● Ability to obtain additional certification for pesticide application, as necessary. ● Ability to learn computer programs or technical devices used by the department at a basic, operational level. ● Familiarity with construction materials, equipment, and supplies used in public works activities. ● Orientation to proper safety procedures normally associated with forestry activities. ● Ability to work in high places using proper safety equipment and procedures. ● Ability to work effectively within deadlines and changes in work priorities. ● Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgment, initiative, and resourcefulness when dealing with employees, City officials, project contractors, and the public. ● Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24-hour basis. Physical Demands and Work Environment: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works both in an office and in the field. While in the office, the employee is regularly required to communicate in person and by telephone, read regular and small print, view and produce written and electronic documents and enter data on a computer keyboard with repetitive keystrokes. The employee must be mobile both in an office setting and in the field with the ability to stand, sit, stoop and kneel, and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee must lift or push/pull objects up to 75 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, if needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in an office setting and in the field. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, outside weather conditions, the risk of electrical shock, vibration, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals.
