JOB DESCRIPTION
ELECTRICIAN/MAINTENANCE APPRENTICE WATER AND WWTP
Supervised By: Wastewater Master Electrician, Water Electrician, Wastewater Electrician,
Superintendent of Wastewater, and or Water Treatment Plant Superintendent
Supervises: None
Position Summary:
Under the supervision of the Wastewater and or Water Electrician, is in training and assists on the
maintenance, repairs and installation of all plant electrical equipment as well as associated
satellite facilities (i.e. SCBS, PAP, lift stations, etc).
Essential Job Functions:
An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential
functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected
to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential
function satisfactorily.
1. Assist with monitoring, testing and calibration of plant electrical systems, instrumentation
and equipment associated with the Water and Wastewater Plants and associated satellite
facilities.
2. Assists in regular maintenance and repair tasks. May be required to respond to emergency
service needs.
3. Assist in research and diagnosis of complex electrical problems. Utilizes schematics,
diagrams, and service manuals to troubleshoot /solve difficult or unusual problems.
4. Assists in installation, modification or upgrades to electrical systems, equipment,
instrumentation, pipe bending, and pulling wire.
5. Operates standard and specialized tools and equipment associated with electrical
installation, maintenance and repair, including hand and power tools, calibration and
diagnostic equipment, and a variety of related meters and implements.
6. Responds to after-hour emergencies as needed.
7. Performs related work as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, abilities and minimum
qualifications necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Reasonable

Requirements include the following:
• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of at least high school level algebra and trigonometry.
• Must be 18 years of age.
• High level of reading comprehension
• The ability to problem solve.
• A valid driver license, a satisfactory driving record, and the ability to
maintain one throughout employment.
• Ability to comply with safety policies and procedures.
• Must have the ability to distinguish different colors used to code electrical components.
• Knowledge of computer applications and equipment, including Microsoft Suit applications,
software specific to the department, and the ability to master new technologies.
• Must reside within an area twenty (20) miles from the nearest boundary of the corporate limits
of the City of Monroe.
• Commitment to a 4-year apprenticeship program, which includes class 1-2 nights per week,
homework and on-the-job training hours.
• Ability to establish effective working relationships and use good judgement, initiative and
resourcefulness when dealing with the public, community leaders, and other employees.
• Ability to understand and follow complex oral and written instructions, and carry them out
independently.
• Ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing.
• Ability to critically assess situations and solve problems, and work effectively under stress,
within deadlines, and changes in work priorities.
• Ability to respond to and work effectively and safely at all hours on an emergency basis.
• Performs related work as required.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of
those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. Reasonable

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. The
employee frequently is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms;
stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to climb or
balance and is frequently required to use motorized equipment, and occasionally operate a
vehicle to travel to other locations such as pump stations to perform work tasks. The employee
must lift or push/pull objects of up to 75 lbs. without assistance. Accommodation will be made, if
needed, for employees required to lift or move objects that exceed this weight.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in a water or wastewater
treatment plant, and occasionally works in the field, including satellite facilities and underground
areas. The employee frequently is exposed to moving mechanical parts; risk of electrical shock;
vibration; fumes or airborne particles; and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work
environment is usually moderate, and can be very loud.
