HomeMy WebLinkAboutFire Marshal Job Description 04 2025CITY OF MONROE JOB DESCRIPTION FIRE MARSHAL Position Summary: Fire Marshal is a skilled inspection and enforcement position which is responsible for promoting fire safety and securing compliance with fire prevention laws and ordinances. The work emphasizes the inspection of commercial and industrial establishments and places of public assembly. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with owners, contractors, developers, City officials, internal and external staff, design professionals, and the general public. Communicate effectively verbally and in writing to audiences of various social, cultural, ethnic, educational, and economic backgrounds. Reports to: Director of Public Safety Supervises: May be called upon to supervise Fire Personnel Revised: March 2025 Essential Job Functions: • Event Planning for the City of Monroe; coordinates with other city departments, organizers, and outside agencies. • Liaison for EMD and participates in EMD drills. • Coordinates the development and implementation of fire prevention programs. • Prepares reports of inspections and investigations performed. • Conducts investigations and mitigates complaints relative to fire hazards. This not only includes complaints such as blocked exits, greasy hood and ducts, or blocked fire lanes, but also the neighbor complaint on open burning. • Investigates suspicious fires, high-value loss, fatal fires, or when required by the fire chief to determine the cause and origin in coordination with Police investigators. May be called upon to coordinate investigative efforts with private investigators and insurance agents and testifies in court when necessary. • The Deputy Chief/Fire Marshal shall perform fire prevention inspections and investigations on local places of public assembly, multiple family dwellings, business and industrial establishments for existing or potential fire hazards; orders correction of dangerous conditions. • Reviews site plans for proposed new construction for the purpose of gathering information for pre-fire/incident plans to be used internally by City of Monroe. • Works closely in joint cooperation with the building department to review plans for the purpose of pre-fire planning and systems testing (i.e.: inspects existing fire escapes, existing portable extinguishers, and existing fire protection hood systems and equipment for proper maintenance, etc.) • Establishes a coordinated tracking system and schedule to conduct the regular fire testing and fire suppression & detection system walk-through of buildings, after the final certificate of occupancy has been issued by the building department. • Interprets and enforces Township codes and ordinances, and state regulations. Has the ability to make recommendations on changes to ordinances and regulations. • Conducts investigations and mitigates complaints relative to fire hazards. This not only includes complaints such as blocked exits, greasy hood and ducts, or blocked fire lanes, but also the neighbor complaint on open burning. • May function as an assistant to the Fire Commander as workloads demand. • May be utilized at fire scenes and may be called upon to be the incident supervisor. Responds to emergency scene if available or requested by on duty Shift Supervisor. • As an experienced Fire Fighter, participates and may be called upon to lead training, develop and presents materials for classroom use, for Fire Fighters in a variety of disciplines. In addition, provides direct and individual training, while evaluating performance and clarifying departmental procedures. • Perform other tasks as directed by the Director or Fire Commander.
