HomeMy WebLinkAboutFirefighter Job Description 03 2025CITY OF MONROE JOB DESCRIPTION FIREFIGHTER Position Summary: Under the direct supervision of the Fire Command staff, Fire Commander or Director of Public Safety, provides fire suppression and emergency response. Protects life and property and provides assistance for emergency medical calls, fire incidents and accidents. Regularly assists in equipment and facility maintenance. Reports to: Fire Command staff, Fire Commander or Director of Public Safety. Supervises: No supervisory responsibilities Essential job functions: An employee in this position is required to perform the following essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation. • Respond to call for emergency medical assistance. Stabilizes patients using established procedures and assists ambulance personnel in accomplishing orderly and timely patient transport. • Respond to fire calls and functions as a professional firefighter. Drives fire apparatus, operates pumps and equipment, lays hose and performs fire combat, containment and suppression tactics. • Participate in a wide variety of training classes and curriculum including fire suppression techniques, emergency medical treatment, hazardous materials mitigation and other functions. • May respond to a variety of hazardous materials incidents to perform defensive activities in accordance with state and federal regulations. • Participates in fire prevention education activities and other special events involving the Department. • Perform general maintenance work in the upkeep of fire facilities, equipment, and • grounds. • Follow policies, procedures, guidelines, and safety rules promulgated in federal, state, local, and departmental regulations. • Performs data entry on computer software to input, review, access records, information, and other various data. • Performs related work as required. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities and Minimum Qualifications : • High School Diploma. • State of Michigan Certification as Firefighter I & II. • Current State of Michigan EMT License. • Current • A good driving record. • Must possess documentation of having successfully completed a candidate physical agility test (CPAT) unless transferring from another career department. • Hazmat operations level certification. • Must reside within 20 miles of the City of Monroe within one year after successfully completing probation. • Ability to acquire and retain a thorough knowledge of the city, including streets, buildings, water supply, unusual hazards and related items. • Skill in the operation of fire vehicles and related apparatus. • Knowledge of modern firefighting methods and techniques. • Ability to maintain poise and professionalism in stabilizing and treating emergency patients and accident victims. • Ability to make sound independent decisions when no assistance is available. • Ability to exercise good judgement, initiative and resourcefulness. • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with the public, elected officials, community leaders, victims, detainees, and other professionals. • Ability to react calmly to fire and other emergency situations and to follow standard procedures. • Ability to work effectively under stress in emergency and confrontational situations. • Ability to effectively communicate and present ideas and concepts orally and in writing. Physical demands, therefor range from sitting in an office or vehicle to exercising the strength, mobility, dexterity and stamina associated with fire suppression or emergency medical calls. The employee is regularly required to communicate with others in person and on the telephone or radio, use sight to review documents and assess public safety scenes, and must regularly travel to other locations. The employee may be exposed to outside weather conditions, may be required to perform tasks in high and/or dangerous places, and may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, explosives, vibration, and other hazardous conditions. The noise level in the work environment can range from quiet in the office to very loud in the field.
