HomeMy WebLinkAboutDetective Sergeant Job Description 03 2025CITY OF MONROE JOB DESCRIPTION DETECTIVE SERGEANT Reports to: Detective Lieutenant Supervises: Detectives, Juvenile Detective, School Resource Officer, MANTIS position, & VIPER position. Position Summary: Under the general direction of the Detective Lieutenant, and thoroughly experienced in police operations and criminal investigations, serves as Detective/Sergeant, directing and supervising activities of detective personnel and School Resource Officer. Maintains detective compliment, special projects and routine processing for the Detective Bureau. Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities and Duties: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. • Maintains case management of active investigations. • Briefs personnel on unusual or pending circumstances, reviews for conformity to departmental standards and clarifies service questions upon requests. • Conducts daily inspections of equipment and personnel, correcting practices and habits not compatible with departmental standards. • Prepares and maintains supply and equipment records, daily activity logs along with evaluating investigative and arrest reports. • Assumes coordinating responsibility for investigation of crimes, arranging mutual police cooperation with other agencies and City departments. • Trains, evaluates and discusses evaluation of assigned personnel on an individual basis and may participate in establishing training programs. • Assumes command of major criminal investigations as circumstances warrant. • Investigates deaths for • Conducts surveillance of suspects and criminal activity and supervises surveillance by subordinates. • Supervises evidence maintenance of Detective Bureau. • Monitors performance of personnel under their command. • Conducts administrative investigations, not involving his or her direct subordinates. • Member of the MEI/Child Death Review team. • Coordinates and maintains Evidence Tech program. • Receives special detail needs from command. • Performs the normal duties of road patrol and other routine police functions as circumstances warrant. • Coordinates and manages the service of out-of-town subpoenas. • Performs additional duties at the direction of the administration. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications: All of the following functions, qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSA's) and duties are essential. An employee in this class should have the equivalent of the following: • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and the City ordinances. • Knowledge of investigative procedures. • Knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations in the City of Monroe to effectively patrol and quickly respond to calls for assistance. • Skill in interpersonal relations, with the ability to deal effectively with subordinates, complainants, witnesses, suspects, prisoners, co-workers and the public. • Mental alertness and good powers of observation to notice suspicious persons and violation of laws, codes and regulations. • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. • Physical strength, endurance and agility to perform the job. • Ability to communicate effectively. • Ability to apply police management principles. • Ability to examine and investigate dead bodies. • Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise special tasks. • • Graduation from high school or equivalent and certification by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) are required. • A valid Michigan driver's license is required. • Other State of Michigan certifications necessary to perform in this position are: firearms qualifications. • Ability to prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, photographs, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. • Enter data and information into a computer. Obtain data and information from a computer. • Utilizes a variety of equipment including weaponry, restraints, radios, vehicles, first aid equipment, cameras, audio/video recorders, and computers. • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks to complete duties. Physical Demands: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a variety of settings, to include being outside, in a vehicle, residences, businesses, or an office. • Generally, works in an office, with low noise levels. • Requires varied work hours.
