HomeMy WebLinkAboutPolice Patrol Sergeant Job Description 03 2025CITY OF MONROE JOB DESCRIPTION POLICE PATROL SERGEANT Reports to: Police Lieutenant Supervises: Police Shift personnel Position Summary: Under the general direction of a Patrol Lieutenant, and thoroughly experienced in police operations. Serves as an assistant Shift Supervisor, directing and supervising activities of shift personnel. Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities and Duties: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties, which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. • Is the first line supervisor. • Assumes responsibilities of Shift Supervisor in the absence of the Patrol Lieutenant. As the Shift Supervisor - responsible for administrative and road supervisory duties when the Patrol Lieutenant is unavailable. • May be called upon to answer Calls For Service (CFS) or written complaints. • Assumes command of major crime scenes as circumstances warrants. • Determines available compliment of personnel and adjusts assignments in the absence of scheduled personnel. Briefs personnel as unusual or pending circumstances, reviews for conformity to departmental standards and clarifies service questions. • Conducts daily inspections of equipment and personnel, correcting practices and habits not compatible with departmental standards. • Prepares and maintains supply and equipment records, daily activity logs along with evaluating accident, investigative and arrest reports. • Assumes coordinating responsibility for response to crimes in progress, disaster emergencies and so forth, arranging mutual police cooperation with other agencies and City departments. • Trains, evaluates and discusses evaluation of assigned personnel on an individual basis and may participate in establishing training programs. • Receives special detail needs from the Patrol Lieutenant and/or Public Safety Administration. • Monitors performance of shift personnel. • May be called upon to administer formal discipline. • Performs additional duties at the discretion of the Shift Lieutenant or Public Safety Administration. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications: All of the following functions, qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSA's) and duties are essential. An employee in this class should have the equivalent of the following: • Knowledge of applicable Federal, State and local laws and the City ordinances. • Knowledge of traffic rules and regulations to issue summons. • Knowledge of the geography, streets and principal locations in the City of Monroe to effectively patrol and quickly respond to calls for assistance. • Skill in interpersonal relations, with the ability to deal effectively with subordinates, complainants, witnesses, suspects, prisoners, co-workers and the public. • Mental alertness and good powers of observation to notice suspicious persons and violation of laws, codes and regulations. • Ability to react calmly and quickly in emergencies. • Physical strength, endurance and agility to perform the job. • Ability to communicate effectively. • Ability to apply police management principles • Ability to plan, coordinate and supervise special tasks. • An Associate Degree from an accredited college is preferred, but not required. • Graduation from high school or equivalent and certification by the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) are required. • A valid Michigan driver's license is required. • Other State of Michigan certifications necessary to perform in this position are: radar operator, firearms qualifications, and Class II Breathalyzer Operator. • Ability to prepare investigative and other reports, including sketches, using appropriate grammar, symbols and mathematical computations. • Enter data and information into a computer. Obtain data and information from a computer. • Certification as a Michigan Firefighter I and II. • CPR Certification. • Utilizes a variety of equipment including weaponry, restraints, radios, vehicles, first aid equipment, cameras, and computers. • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks to complete duties. Physical Demands: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a variety of settings, to include being outside, in a vehicle, residences, businesses, or an office. • Generally, works in an office or police vehicle, with low, moderate and high noise levels. • Requires shift work hours.
