HomeMy WebLinkAboutSchool Resource Officer May 2025School Resource Officer Position Summary: Under the general direction of a Sergeant, a School Resource Officer assumes the responsibilities of performing specialized police work in crime prevention, police -youth relations and student safety. Ensures a safe school environment, teaches positive citizenship, investigates offenses that occur on school property and interacts with school officials. Reports to: Detective Sergeant Supervises: No supervisory responsibility Revised: May 2025 Essential Job Functions, Responsibilities and Duties: An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all of the following essential functions. These examples do not include all of the duties which the employee may be expected to perform. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. • Assumes responsibility for the investigation of crimes that occur on school property or school functions. • Provides security at elementary and secondary public and private schools, within the City of Monroe as required. • Teaches citizenship classes. (i.e., TEAM; drug awareness, school violence, etc). • Acts as a positive role model to improve police relations. • Conducts counseling of students. • Interacts with school administration, parents, police department and court system. • Carry out Community Officer or Road Patrol duties when not assigned to the school system. • It is understood that there may be times when the School Resource Officer (SRO) is unable to be on duty and on school grounds. However, it is generally expected that the SRO will be present during school hours and will attend school functions as needed. The consistent presence of the SRO is important for maintaining a safe and supportive environment for both students and staff. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications: All of the following functions, qualifications, knowledge, skills, abilities (KSA's) and duties are essential. An employee in this class should have the equivalent of the following: • Knowledge of principles, practices and procedures of criminal detection and investigation, for the purpose of thoroughly investigating complaints. • Knowledge of juvenile justice procedures. • Skill in the techniques of communications and teaching. • Ability to prioritize work under changing and/or stressful situations to complete duties. • Ability to assure that investigations are properly completed. • Ability to gather and disseminate information for the benefit of the public, schools and the department. Physical Demands: The physical demands and work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is in a variety of settings, to include being outside, in a vehicle, residences, businesses, or an office. • Generally, works in an office environment, with low noise levels • Exposed to weather conditions while performing investigations
